SL Benfica – The Club
Sport Lisboa e Benfica commonly known as Benfica, is a Portuguese sports club based in Lisbon, Portugal. Founded in 1904, SL Benfica is one of the ‘Big Three’ football clubs in Portugal. The team plays its home matches in the Estádio daLuz with a capacity of 65,647. Unlike many other European football clubs, Benfica sócios (paying supporters) have owned and operated the club since its creation. SL Benfica is said to be the world’s most supported football club.
Domestically, SL Benfica holds a record of 38 Primeira Liga titles, a record of 26 Taça de Portugal, a record 7 Taça da Liga, 3 Campeonato de Portugal and 8 Supertaça Candido de Oliveira. SL Benfica has the distinction of being the first club in the history of the Primeira Liga to have completed an entire 30 game season unbeaten (in 1972/73). Internationally, SL Benfica was the first and only Portuguese club to win 2 European Cups consecutively, in 1961 and 1962. After the 1962 European Cup final, the then manager Bela Guttmann, left the club having his pay rise request refused. On leaving the club grounds, Guttmann allegedly cursed the club declaring, “Not in 100 years from now will Benfica ever be European Champion”. Since then, they have lost 8 of their subsequent European finals, including 5 European cups.
The Training Facilities
The Benfica Campus is mainly used by the senior squad and the youth teams. It is comprised of six pitches, two of them of synthetic turf. One of the pitches has a covered stand with a capacity of 1600 people. This complex also includes two gyms, dressing rooms, swimming pools, Jacuzzi’s, sauna, a cafeteria and an auditorium with a capacity of 75 people.
